Two new apartment buildings of six storeys each, framing the generous front garden leading to an elegant townhouse in the centre of Aachen. The garden opens up towards an avenue and is currently surrounded by flank walls on each side and by the main facade of the townhouse, set back from the street, on the long side.
Internally, the layout of the apartments are reminiscent of the spatial qualities of the existing villa. Long sequences of spacious rooms, reducing circulation spaces to an almost imperceptible minimum.
The proposal subtly extends the street frontage on each side of the garden, continuing the rhythm of the late 19th Century buildings on each side. Large windows articulate the facades facing the garden. The curved back walls form a transition space between the garden and the existing villa. The softness of the curve negotiates the space between the two buildings, while maximising space inside the apartments.
